The power utility Eskom is knocking on the Maluti-a-Phofung (MAP) Local Municipality's doors in the Free State to take over on the matter related to electricity supply.

Talks are under way between the municipality's leadership and Eskom. It is believed that the solution will be reached soon.

The executive mayor, Gilbert Mokotso, confirmed to OFM News that the DAA was signed and sent to Eskom.

The unstable power supply has been a serious challenge in this municipality where the residents and businesses became the victims of the darkness.

This gave the residents a negative impression that the municipality doesn't adequately work towards solving the power supply challenge.

The dark living conditions continue to affect those who buy electricity, including those who decided to tamper with the meter boxes.

However, the mayor said people must avoid using electricity illegally because the outstanding balance of R7.6 billion to Eskom is rising. "I am appealing to all residents to buy electricity and avoid illegal connections as this increases the debt that we have to Eskom."

He concluded by saying the municipality is working hands-on with the Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) at the provincial level in terms of finding the strategies that should be put in place to overcome the debt and Eskom matters.
