North West roads blocked during shutdown─── 13:39 Mon, 20 Mar 2023
Roads were earlier blocked on Monday, 20 March 2023, in Zeerust and Vryburg in the North West as part of the national shutdown organised by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
OFM News learned that in Klerksdorp, taxis are operating.
This is according to the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) regional secretary in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda municipal district, Shakes Mayekani.
He told OFM News that although they aren't part of the shutdown, they will be available to transport those who are participating in the protest if need be - because it's their job.
The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, says 80% of businesses have not opened, adding police are hard at work to ensure everyone is safe.
The EFF in the North West has indicated they are happy with the support during the demonstrations.
The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in North West's secretary, Vincent Diphoko, says it's a normal working day for their members, but they are concerned over their safety as some use public transport.
