Free State, Northern Cape experience heatwave─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 10:10 Sun, 15 Jan 2023
Residents within the southwestern parts of Free State and the southeastern and central parts of the Northern Cape are warned to take precautions during the current heatwave.
The spokesperson for the Mangaung Metro Municipality, Qondile Khedama, says the South African Weather Service (SAWS) shared that the heatwave is expected to end on Monday, 16 January 2023.
“Mangaung Metro is also affected by the persistently high temperatures exceeding the average maximum, with temperatures expected to rise between 35 and 36 degrees,” he adds.
Khedama explains that under these conditions, prolonged exposure to the midday sun poses health risks. Therefore residents are urged to avoid direct exposure to the sun and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, rest under the shade and dress lightly with brighter colours.
He further explains that due to the hot temperatures, the fire danger index for the weekend varies between very dangerous and extremely dangerous.
“Dry, very hot and windy conditions will persist over the period. Veld fires will start very easily and spread rapidly while combatting the fires will be difficult and dangerous,” he explains.
Khedama concludes that no open fires or flames are allowed in the veld while activities such as welding and grinding on grass must be avoided.
“People must be careful not to cause fires and be ready to assist with firefighting.”
