Ramaphosa cites Northern Cape as target for international investors | News Article

President Cyril Ramaphosa has cited the Northern Cape as a big target province for investors.

He said this whilst addressing hundreds of Northern Cape residents at the Presidential Imbizo held in the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington on Friday 21 October 2022. He says in terms of figures, the province has been able to create more jobs than many other provinces. Ramaphosa continued to say the level of unemployment the in the province is continually shrinking as compared to other provinces.

“I was in Saudi Arabia with a number of ministers already and some of the companies that are seeing the opportunities here in the Northern Cape with regard to solar, with regard to renewables and the green hydrogen want to come to no other place other than the Northern Cape and I hope you are all ready for the investment that is going to keep coming here,” President Ramaphosa says.

According to the 2021 statistics in South Africa, the unemployment rate decreased in the Northern Cape, falling from 25,1% to 23,1%.

Ramaphosa arrived on Thursday 20 October 2022 and went on an oversight visit at the Acwa Redstone Solar Thermal Power Plant, together with the Premier, Zamani Saul, and the Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi.

According to the provincial government, this is the largest renewable energy investment in the country and the construction is at 45.5% completion. It is expected that the plant will be in full operation in 2024. The provincial government adds that to date 31% of procurement spent has been mobilised on local content. Employment created thus far stands at 972 jobs with 1500 expected at the peak of construction.
