The North West Legislature Committee on Cooperative Governance (Cogta) is on Tuesday 4 October 2022 set to scrutinise the provincial department over the March 2022 Deelpan flood disaster after one person died and hundreds were left homeless.

According to the chairperson of the committee, Aaron Motswana, the committee will embark on an oversight visit of four days and will have a series of meetings, including with municipalities, the Office of the Premier and communities. This is to assess the extent of damage and progress made by the aforementioned institutions in their efforts to alleviate the effects of the flood disaster, which destroyed infrastructure including schools, roads and the houses of at least 170 families.

Following the disruptive floods, which killed one person and destroyed houses, the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Pam Tshwete, revealed that R54,9 million had been allocated to the province to build new houses for people who were affected by floods in Deelpan and surrounding areas.

However, responding to these allegations, the municipality’s spokesperson, Lehlohonolo March, said the allegations are not factual. He said only around R16 000 was spent to procure 90 pairs of water boots that were distributed to matriculants of the aforementioned school during the disaster caused by heavy floods in March 2022.
