The mining company says it has made R20 million available to the affected residents and the town as a form of relief. On Sunday 11 September 2022 houses and cars were swept away by mudslides following the mine dam's collapse.

According to the mine spokesperson, Leigh Ann Carey, the company has immediately made this money available to the affected people on the ground and for the restoration of the town.

So far 1 person has been declared dead, 8 people are still missing whilst 73 were hospitalised due to injuries sustained following the mudslides.

Residents and officials are still waiting for President Cyril Ramaphosa who is expected to arrive shortly to do an oversight visit and address the affected residents of the town.

"Jagersfontein Development is devasted by the breach at its slime dam yesterday and impacts on the local community. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the single fatality and the speedy recovery of the injured in the disaster. The treatment facility has stabilised activity at the dam.

"It is cooperating with the law enforcement authorities and will offer every assistance to the community while undertaking a full investigation. We have confirmation that the waste water is not hazardous. Jagersfontein Development remains committed to the well-being of the community and will lead clean-up operations," Carey adds.

One of the flood victims, Tshepiso Ngubeni, earlier told OFM News residents are hopeful that President Cyril Ramaphosa will not only speak about intervention by providing residents with food parcels, but will talk about what actually will be done to address the issue of houses that were lost in the floods. He also called on the mine representative to take responsibility for what had transpired. Ngubeni, also detailed how he and his family survived the traumatic incident.

The municipality's spokesperson, Solomzi Phama, told OFM News that they confirm, without fear of favour, that there was negligence which led to the flood disaster which claimed lives and left over 100 people homeless or destitute, and some of the municipal infrastructure completely destroyed.

Phama said the negligence is something that has been raised by the mayor, Xolani Tseletsele, even before he ascended to the position of mayor.
