North West province's Mmabatho stadium in Mahikeng is currently receiving much-needed renovations.

The Mahikeng Local Municipality and Department of Sport, Arts and Culture are renovating the tennis courts, as they intend to train and produce tennis players in the area.

Mahikeng Local Municipality spokesperson, Gaolatlhe Nkoane, confirmed to OFM News that the municipality - in partnership with the department - is renovating the tennis courts in order to resuscitate tennis in and around Mahikeng. Mmabatho stadium had previously hosted large soccer matches, including the then off-season Vodacom Challenge, which saw two top teams from Africa competing against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Residents in the area have been calling for the stadium to be operational again, citing this will boost the economy in the province. In 2018, the Mahikeng Cultural Music Festival was held at the stadium.

Former North West Premier, Job Mokgoro, previously indicated that there was a need for refurbishment of the 59 000-seater stadium.
