North West pupil scoops up gold at international science festival─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:02 Fri, 15 Jul 2022
A North West learner from Gabonewe High School in Rustenburg has won a gold medal in his research and application in machine learning at an International Festival of Engineering, Science, and Technology (I-FEST2).
North West spokesperson for Education, Elias Malindi, says the tournament was held in Monastir, Tunisia, from 24 to 30 June 2022.
In his statement, Malindi adds that the 17-year-old Kutlwano Tshatiwa was selected as one of two young scientists at last year's annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, to represent the country at the grand tech festival in Tunisia. He says Tshwatiwa used millions of images to test custom model and distillation for mobile app machines, whilst the other learner from Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape, won a gold medal in his research on physical sound. Malindi adds that one of the most inspiring things about Tshatiwa’s win is that his knowledge of machinery is self-taught.
Malindi adds that the MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela, expressed her happiness for the 17-year-old, whilst also encouraging other learners to follow suit. He says Mmaphefo sent a message of appreciation to teachers, parents, and the principal of Gabonewe High School for nurturing the young talent.
