Appointment of private attorneys for alleged cop killers delays bail─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 06:15 Fri, 13 Aug 2021
Legal aid is yet to appoint private attorneys for two of the five accused in the heinous murder of two Mareetsane police officers in the North West.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the province, Henry Mamothame, reveals that the appointment delays has led to another postponement of bail application proceedings in the matter since the accused Benjamin Jacobs, Jeremiah Mongale, Rapulana Keikantse, Matthews Modukane and a 16-year-old minor were apprehended for the murder, malicious damage to property and theft of one of the police officer’s firearms in late July 2021.
The Itsoseng Magistrate’s Court has now postponed the matter to 19 August for this process to take place. Mamothame says the state intends on opposing bail for the accused.
The charred bodies of 50-year-old Constable Simon Ngakaemang Ntsekeletsa and 42-year-old Sergeant Mojalefa Horatius Molete were discovered at the back of their burnt state vehicle on 27 July 2021 in Ganyesa.
They were last seen the day prior as they were attending to a stock theft incident in Mareetsane. They never returned back to the police station.
Ntsekeletsa and Molete were buried in a funeral service attended by Police Minister Bheki Cele and North West Premier Job Mokgoro on 7 August in Lichtenburg. Cele addressed those in attendance and emphasised the need to improve the police’s tactical response to defend themselves against criminality and attacks.
