A security guard employed by the British multinational security services company G4S has been suspended after a shooting incident in the Matlosana Mall near Klerksdorp in the North West.

G4S Managing Director Renso Smit tells OFM News the company notified the authorities upon learning of the incident where a 24-year-old man was shot in his feet on 29 December 2020. Police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, previously confirmed to OFM News that the police in that area are investigating a case of negligence against the security officer.

She said the firearm involved in the shooting incident will be sent for forensic testing and no-one has been arrested following the incident.

However, Smit says their G4S guards undergo intense and ongoing training on the proper and authorised use of weapons and security equipment.

"We have strict internal protocols in place to ensure that firearms are used and carried safely, so this incident is deeply regrettable. Ensuring the safety and security of members of the public is the cornerstone of our business,” Smit adds.
