Free State police are searching for four suspects in connection with a botched armed robbery at a clothing retailer in Sasolburg on Sunday, June 16.

The clothing retailer is located inside Sasolburg Mall, whose management is yet to confirm the incident. Free State police spokesperson, Fikiswa Matoti says the robbery occurred at around 10:45 in the morning as half of the group of suspects went into the store and accosted two female employees forcing them into a store room.

They demanded that the employees provide them with the key to the safe and pack an unconfirmed number of cell phones in a bag.

While the employees were doing this, the suspects left the store room without the items they demanded. Meanwhile, a security officer evacuated the store, moving those inside the store to safety and police later cleared the whole building.

Matoti says “it is suspected that the four suspects fled the scene during evacuation”. While one suspect was reportedly armed, no was injured in the incident.

Police are yet to release any new developments in the case.
