The issues that include maintenance of water and sanitation infrastructure in the North West came in the spotlight during the Provincial Water Summit held recently.

Various roleplayers met at a provincial water Summit in Vryburg where they all agreed that more needs to be done to keep the water clean and accessible to all communities. The North West MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Motlalepula Rosho, said there is a need to streamline different sources of infrastructure funding to address the challenges in this regard.

OFM News has previously reported of unrest by communities across the province who were enraged by the poor water quality and raw sewage engulfing their yards. According to Rosho, the government will continue to work with municipalities, sector departments, academics, and other roleplayers and develop a provincial water master plan that can help salvage the water and infrastructure issues at municipalities across the province.

She further announced that the department will also continue to have further engagements with representatives from the agricultural, economic and education sector in an effort to get their inputs for the master plan. Rosho said the province is predominantly rural and mostly rely on underground water. They need to do studies to further explore this as an alternative source of water to address the current challenge. “The master plan is used to guide the investment planning for the development of water and sanitation services,” she concludes.
