Memories to cherish | News Article

When a loved one passes away, memories should be cherished in an environment that is beautiful, safe and tranquil. Bloemfontein Memorial Park understands this

and offers great options during this difficult, but inevitable time in the lives of those left behind.

The Bloemfontein Memorial Park is not merely a memorial park designed to house as many niches for ashes as possible, but rather a park with a deep and meaningful story and journey.

The park was designed on a cross axis, north to south and east to west. With a series of elements a linear progression is achieved, creating a beginning (the Folly), a middle (the Mausoleum) and an end (the Reflection Pool).

The north/south axis divides the memoriam into an eastern and western side, creating the symbolism of life (sunrise) and death (sunset).

The entire park is filled with symbolic designs, aimed at creating a space imbued with a sense of tranquillity and spirituality.

The Folly

The Folly is the ‘gateway’ to the memoriam. It consists of simple geometric forms and houses a staircase which leads to a view point. The Folly affords one a bird’s eye view of the Bloemfontein Memorial Park. The symbolism behind the geometric forms equate to the timeless universal reality behind all religions. The Folly is where the water tank, symbolic of the origin, starts and flows into a northern direction, symbolising our passage through life. Cost: R4 000.

The Mausoleum

The heart of our memorial park, the Mausoleum, consists of a number of interconnected details. Raised levels, a water canal, gabion walls, concrete walls and sheer glass panes work together to lead one from the entrance, around a central feature, through to the exit. The water element, which originates in the Folly, circulates around the Mausoleum, accompanying you on your journey through our tranquil space.

Cost: R4 000.

The Spiritual Auditorium

The entrance to the Auditorium is on the west, which has its own spiritual connotation. The entrance consists of a raised concrete floor which leads over the water canal, encouraging the idea that one is entering a spiritual, intimate and tranquil place.

The Reflection Pool / Lights of Remembrance

Your journey through our memorial park ends at an understated vertical element at the centre, which is a reflection pool. This pool reflects the sky and immediately establishes a link between heaven and earth. This is not only the end of the journey but also where the water canal dissolves.

The Step Walls

These are a series of free-standing walls, extending from the centre along an east/west axis. They serve to further establish the linear design of the memoriam, as well as providing an alternative internment option. Cost: R3 500.

The Columns

The columns provide the final internment alternative. They are free- standing one-metre high concrete structures, each with only one cairn. As a result, the column becomes a de facto headstone for the deceased. Cost: R4 500.

Lawn Columns

Lawn Columns are arranged around a beautiful tree and can be bought as a package for the family or as single columns.

The Angels Rest Garden

A special garden to honour the little angels of this world that were taken too soon. Cost: R2 500 (block) or

R4 500 (column).
