Former councillors (4 000) to get payment | News Article
Bloemfontein - Former councillors might get their once-off gratuity payment that was published in the Government Gazette last month in time for Christmas shopping.

This is according to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

The department said, in an answer to a written question in parliament, that payment to councillors has commenced after recommendations by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers were published. Thereafter a payment model for the payment was finalised mid-November and payments are expected to happen soon.

The department budgeted a total amount of R309 million for this purpose and said by the end of November approximately 4 000 councillors still needed to be paid. The provincial breakdown for the number of councillors that qualified for the pay-out was not available yet.
