One adult, five children in FS hospital following bee attack─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 08:40 Sun, 12 May 2019
An adult man and five children between the ages of six and twelve are in a Free State hospital after they were attacked by a swarm of bees, close to Bethlehem.
ER24 spokesperson, Ineke van Huyssteen, says the victims were on a weekend school trip, when they were stung multiple times by an aggressive swarm of bees.
Van Huyssteen says a fellow teacher managed to transport the injured to the N5 between Kestell and Bethlehem, where emergency medical personnel attended to them. The man was the worst off and found to be in a serious condition, while the five children sustained injuries ranging between minor to moderate. They were all transported to Mediclinic Hoogland in Bethlehem for further medical care. Their current status is not yet known.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time that a bee attack has been reported in the Free State this year. In April a swarm of bees claimed the lives of three dogs outside Bloemfontein. The owner of the farm, who asked not to be named, told OFM News that she and her family, including her young daughter who is allergic to bees like her mother, were alerted by an employee that a swarm of bees was surrounding the three dogs.
The dogs died within seconds. She warned other farmers in the area to keep a look-out for the highly aggressive bees and ensure that their people and animals are protected.
