Bloemfontein gear up for the 10th Anniversary of the Engen Knockout Challenge─── 12:20 Fri, 21 Jun 2013
Bloemfontein - The 10th anniversary of the annual Engen Knockout Challenge kicks off in July with Engen Petroleum again bringing together 16 talented youth teams in the Free State area to compete in the one of the most prestigious Under 17 youth soccer tournaments in the country.
The Bloemfontein leg of the Knockout Challenge will be hosted by Grey College High school from 05 to 07 July, 2013.
The tournament has become a firm fixture on the youth soccer calendar as teams from a number of SAFA clubs, youth academies and schools compete for the champion’s title.
Under the supervision of the Tournament Director – Ludwig Koekemoer, the weekend again promises to deliver top quality football as 320 young men do battle for honour and recognition. Sixteen teams will participate either by invitation and/or through qualifying rounds and will play a total of 48 matches over three days.
The “field of dreams” will no doubt attract scouts from across the country in search of their next Football superstar.
Created specifically to promote competitive conditions for the under 17 category, the Knockout challenge levels the playing fields, affording young football players an equal opportunity to perform to their best potential in the hope of being recognised and the prospect of transforming their football future.
Since its inception the Engen Knockout Challenge has influenced the lives of approximately 18 000 participants across South Africa and has contributed to the exposure and birthing of many current football champions applying their trade in the professional and national ranks.
In addition to the football activity on the field, the tournament will also have a range of exciting activities over the weekend and which include a “10 Best Seats” competition where the best supporters over the weekend will get a chance to sit in the “best seats” on the final day of the tournament.
There will also be designated family areas for kids to join in on the festivities.
In celebration of Engen’s 10th Anniversary of the Engen Knockout Challenge, one promising player will be selected to attend a dedicated high performance programme at the TUKS High Performance Centre in Pretoria.
During their stay they will experience what it is like to live the life of a professional footballer. Their programme will include activities such as Sport Science Training, Technical sessions, bleep tests, psychology talks and many other activities that will be beneficial to their growth as footballers.
“Our vision remains to support the development in football as a part of community cohesion.
We look forward to this youth tournament each year as it is instrumental in providing development and exposure opportunities for the young football enthusiast who would traditionally not be able to participate in an event of this stature”, commented Brad Bergh, Engen Group Sponsorship Manager.
This year’s 10th anniversary celebration promises excitement and fun, on and off the field and Engen looks forward to welcoming all to yet another weekend of quality Youth Football taking place at Grey College between 5 – 7 July 2013.
