- Central SA stand together, back our farmers

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much” – Helen Keller

Areas within Central South Africa remain in the grip of a crippling drought.

According to the Northern Cape Early Warning Committee, the province is experiencing one of the worst droughts in more than a century with prolonged drought conditions having prevailed for the past five years, resulting in a devastating knock-on effect on agriculture, the rural economy and the social welfare of residents.

In the far flung western regions of North West, the situation is also dire.

Furthermore, Rand Water has warned that this province as well as the Free State could soon find themselves facing more water restrictions if current demands do not change.

Now, OFM is calling on Central South Africa to stand together to assist these affected areas.

This page is dedicated to initiatives aiding in drought relief. Peruse to see where the affected areas are, their needs and how you can help.

Plight of Farming Communities

According to a report from the Northern Cape Early Warning Committee, which was already compiled in May, farmers are so indebted that they cannot secure loans to buy feed to keep their animals alive. More and more farm workers are at risk of losing their jobs. Businesses, like abattoirs, are battling to keep their doors open and are downscaling working days from five-day weeks to four day weeks.

Farming communities are bearing the brunt of the drought, as children are being taken out of school because their parents cannot afford transport costs, while the sick are foregoing health care because they cannot afford to get to the nearest clinic.

In the worst-case scenario, a total of 62 000 jobs throughout the provincial and South African economy, with direct and indirect links to the provincial agricultural sector, stand to be affected if no additional help is forthcoming for Northern Cape farmers.

Even if rains come and relief is provided, it will take approximately another five years for farmers and the land to recuperate.
