Johan Champion (18) achieved eight distinctions in the subjects Physical Science, Life Orientation, English First Additional Language, German Second Additional Language, Accounting, Life Sciences, Maths and Afrikaans Home Language. 

MEC of Education, Tate Makgoe, named Champion the province's top performer during a media conference in the city earlier.

Sentraal’s headmaster, Johan Vorster, says Champion is a true champ who worked hard. He says Champion consistently achieved an average of 95%. It was expected that he would be among the top achievers in the province, says Vorster. "The school is grateful for Champion's achievement and is also proud of him."

Champion says he is proud of his achievement and had some advice for next year's matrics.

Eunice Girls High School in Bloemfontein also achieved the highest performance rate for Accounting and Maths.

Oranje Girls School walked away with the top honours for Physical Science. The Northern Cape's top achiever is Emeleo Duister of Northern Cape High.

Champion was also earlier named the dux pupil of Sentraal Secondary School. His final results: Physical Science (99%), Life Orientation (98%), English First Additional Language (97%), German Second Additional Language (96%), Accounting (95%), Life Sciences (94%), Maths (93%) and Afrikaans Home Language (92%).
