Cholera outbreak: Travellers urged to be cautious | News Article

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases is urging travellers to take proper precautions, to avoid contracting cholera.

Ongoing cholera outbreaks have been reported in Zimbabwe, Angola, Tanzania, Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Since the Zimbabwe outbreak, there have been four laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera in South Africa.

Over 10,000 cases were reported in Zimbabwe, claiming 59 lives.

Those travelling to yellow fever-endemic countries are urged to make sure that their yellow fever vaccinations are up-to-date.

People are also being urged to drink safe water, use soap when washing hands, eat well-cooked meals and wash or peel fruit and vegetables before eating them.
