The Proteas Women’s opening batter, Tazmin Brits, will face a lengthy period on the sidelines after experiencing discomfort during last week’s first One-Day International against Sri Lanka.

Brits missed one on the seven-wicket win against Sri Lanka in Kimberley on Saturday due to a knee injury.

The destructive batter who experienced discomfort during her sensational knock of 116-runs in East London and a MRI scan revealed that she tore the meniscus in her left knee and she also has sprained her medial collateral ligament (MCL). She is scheduled to go under the knife on Wednesday.

The Proteas are hoping she will be fit and ready for their pending tour overseas in June and July. It will also be important for Brits to undergo surgery now in order to ensure that she will be available for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in September and October.

Brits said the news of her injury is devasting but she is confident that she will be back in full swing soon.

“Still heartbroken and devastated about my injury, but I so grateful for the overwhelming support I've received since the announcement of my injury,” said Brits.

“I will undergo surgery on Wednesday and will spend the next few weeks prioritising slowing down and recovering while under the care of the finest medical professionals in Gauteng.

“If there's one thing I know I'm good at, it’s a comeback, so I'll be out there in full swing soon.”

On Wednesday the Proteas will face Sri Lanka in Potchefstroom in the third and final One-Day International.
