A man convicted for his role in the July looting and riots in KwaZulu-Natal has been jailed for eight years.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says Njabulo Ncube was sentenced this week in the Durban Regional Court following his conviction of housebreaking with intent to steal, and theft.
Regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson Kara, said Ncube and a group of others broke into a shop in the Umbilo area and stole groceries.
They were arrested by members of the police who were passing by the scene.
Kara said Ncube conceded that he had no means to compensate for the R27 000 damages or to pay a fine and was thus sentenced accordingly.
Dozens of people have been arrested and charged in connection with the looting and mayhem in KZN and Gauteng last year which cost the country an estimated R50 billion.
