North West University student drowns | News Article

A 34-year-old North West University (NWU) student has drowned in the university’s pool yesterday.

NWU spokesperson, Louis Jacobs, says the incident happened at the university’s Potchefstroom campus at about 15:00 yesterday afternoon while the student and his 20-year-old friend were relaxing at the pool. Both students are male, first-year Education students at the university. Jacobs says the deceased allegedly jumped into the deep side of the pool and did not emerge. He was pulled out by a fellow student after his friend made alarm. Paramedics were alerted and they attempted to resuscitate him. He was taken to Potchefstroom Hospital in a critical condition. He died yesterday evening.

Jacobs says the university is saddened by the incident but would like to clarify the incident did not take place during any university activity or event. He says the university extends their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. An inquest is being investigated by the police.

Jacobs says they are unable to reveal the deceased’s name at this stage because the family has yet to identify the body.
