Mafube municipal workers have downed tools over the non-payment of salaries.
Workers were notified on Monday that they would not be paid on time.
Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor in the municipality, Marchand du Plessis says at this stage office and essential staff, such as water purification staff, are still reporting for duty.
The DA has called on Free State Finance MEC, Elzabe Rockman and Cogta MEC, Olly Mlamleli, to investigate the reasons for the late payment of salaries, and to take appropriate action against officials responsible.
Du Plessis says employees have been exposed to this abuse by municipal management for quite some time.
