Bloemfontein - Two people were killed and more than 20 others injured this afternoon, after a school bus, light motor vehicle and SUV collided on the R705, about 10km from Jacobsdal in the Free State.
Sixteen-year-old Nico Grobler was killed instantly and the driver of a BMW, who has not been named yet, also died on the scene.
Meanwhile, headmaster of the Hoër Landbouskool Jacobsdal, Henco Gericke, says the school is heartbroken and Grobler’s death is a great loss. He says the school would have done everything possible to prevent the unfortunate incident. The school is praying for Grobler’s family and friends. They will continuously support them.
According to Gericke, trauma councillors and a psychologist from the school have already provided counselling to survivors and eyewitnesses. Gericke told OFM News from the accident scene that some of the learners who sustained minor injuries were transported with alternate vehicles back to the school where parents and staff members waited. He could not yet provide details of where the injured learners were taken to.
According to him two buses from the school were on their way to Kimberley for a tug of war competition when the accident happened.
According to ER24’s Russel Meiring three of the injured learners were taken to the Kimberley Hospital, while two learners received treatment at a local doctor. Another learner was taken to a nearby clinic. He says on arrival, ER24 paramedics found the school bus on its side. A wrecked BMW and Toyota Condor laid in pieces across the entire scene.
