Rory McIlroy will start the fourth round of the Wells Fargo Championship just one shot behind leader Xander Schauffele, after a superb third round in North Carolina.

The Northern Irishman started the third round four shots behind Schauffele, but played a second bogey-free third round to finish four-under-par 67 in round three.  He is seeking his fourth title at the championship, after winning in 2010, 2015 and 2021.

Shaufffele by no means had a bad day, hitting two birdies and an eagle for one-under 70, but after the round he admitted to USA Today that he will have to up his game on Sunday to keep McIlroy behind him.

“I’m going to have to earn it tomorrow. I’ve got Rory breathing down my neck,” he said. “I think if I strike the ball the way I did today off the tee and just a little more focus coming into the greens, picking the spots and then going through my process a little better, should be in a good shape.”

South Korea’s Sungjae Im is four shots behind the American leader on eight under, while Austria's Sepp Straka is a shot further back.

South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout is still in 13th place and ended the third round with two-under 72.
