Oscar judge jails man for killing wife's lover: report

───   08:35 Thu, 03 Apr 2014

Pretoria - A minibus taxi driver who killed his wife's boyfriend in a fit of jealousy was sentenced to 15 years by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

Judge Thokozile Masipa, who is also the presiding judge in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial, convicted Hans Isaacs of attempted murder, murder and arson after he doused Chris Sibanda's home with petrol and set it alight in January last year.

The Citizen reported she sentenced him to 30 years' imprisonment, but he will only have to serve 15 years.

Isaacs's common-law wife, Virginia Ramodike, was spending the evening at Sibanda's home, which is around the corner from where she and Isaacs lived. Ramodike suffered injuries as a result of the flames and Sibanda later died in hospital.

Isaacs had found out that his wife was having an affair with Sibanda.

Ramodike told a social worker that although she loved Isaacs, she had an affair with Sibanda because she was bored.

During her judgment, Masipa reportedly remarked that Ramodike had a "soft spot" for Isaacs.

Pistorius is on trial for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

He shot her dead through a locked toilet door at his Pretoria home on Valentine's Day last year. He claims he mistook her for an intruder.

The trial resumes on 7 April.
