Crater in N1 after crash, explosion─── 10:16 Thu, 27 Feb 2014
Polokwane - An explosion in which four police officers and a truck driver were killed left a crater in the road and flung parts of the truck about 300 metres, Limpopo police said on Thursday.
The blast occurred on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane early on Thursday morning.
It is understood that at about 01:00 a grocery truck collided with a truck carrying explosives, Eyewitness News tweeted. Soon after, police arrived on the scene of the collision when the explosives went off.
Apart from the four dead, three others were taken to hospital, one of them in a critical condition. One of the injured is also a police officer.
Three other vehicles were damaged in the explosion.
"The drivers of those vehicles were taken to hospital but they did not suffer any life threatening injuries," the police’s Ronel Otto told Sapa.
Police are investigating who the trucks belonged to.
The N1 has been closed to traffic as forensic officers are investigating the scene, police said.
