The Metropolitan Police's Counter-Terrorism Command is leading an investigation into a collision of a car with security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, the Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the car hit barriers outside the Parliament, injuring several people. A male driver was detained.

"While we are keeping an open mind, the Met's Counter-Terrorism Command is leading the investigation into the #Westminster incident," the Metropolitan Police wrote on Twitter.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May expressed her gratitude to the emergency services for their response to the incident, adding that her thoughts were with the people wounded in the car crash.

"My thoughts are with those injured in the incident in Westminster and my thanks to the emergency services for their immediate and courageous response," May said, as quoted by her office's Twitter account.

The terror threat has remained high in the United Kingdom in recent years. The country has faced a number of bloody terror acts, most notably the attack on London's Westminster Bridge and parliament grounds in March 2017, as well as a concert bombing in Manchester on May 22, 2017.
