Bloemfontein - Governments need to be proactive in introducing and updating law on health and safety according to International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The comparative data on global fatal accidents by region reveals that, compared to North America and Europe, the fatality rate is as much as three times greater in the developing world.
The organisation states that most countries in Asia show a poor record of adherence to health and safety laws, and standards.
This evaluation also observes the biggest historic industrial tragedy that happened on 3rd of December, 31 years ago of a gas leak that claimed more than 15,000 people’s lives in Bhopal, India.
The gas released at least 30 tons of a highly toxic gas to surrounding shanty towns in that area. OFM Lindiwe Mathebula spoke to an Occupational Health and Safety expert, Justine Hobday on where South Africa stands.
