If there were ever a way to end the 2019 US Open, this was it

The US Open saw some upsets being caused in the knockout stages of the tournament with Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic being eliminated in the men's section, while over in the women's section Elina Svitolina and Naomi Osaka lost their places in the tournament leading into the final.

Going into the men's final, the king of clay, Rafael Nadal was set to do battle against Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev had already seen off Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter and semi finals and had one major obstacle standing in his way on the other side of the court, Rafael Nadal. The Spanish Champ had an easier road to the final, beating Berrettini and Schwartzman on his way to the final. In the final, Nadal faced the Russian, looking to win his nineteenth Grandslam title.

Nadal dominated proceedings early on, taking the first two sets 7-5, 6-3 in what looked like it would be a simple victory for the Spaniard. Medvedev fought back, winning the following two sets 5-7, 4-6 to send the match into a fifth set.

Four hours and 50 minutes after the start of the match Rafa took the final set 6-4 to win Grandslam number 19 and his second one of the year. The win has Nadal just one Grandslam shy of record holder, Roger Federer, who currently holds 20 titles.

In addition to reaching the brink of Federer's mark, Nadal moved one shy of the Open era record five US Open titles won by Federer, Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras.

This year's US Open set an all-time attendance record with 737 872 fans watching over the Flushing Meadows fortnight.
