SA's Simmonds beats top seed in Korea─── MORGAN PIEK 08:12 Tue, 21 May 2019
South Africa's Chanel Simmonds beat top seed Ya-Hsuan Lee in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 to win the W25 Changwon women’s World Tennis tour event in South Korea on Sunday.
The South African has had a great week in South Korea, which saw her win the doubles as well alongside Chieh-Yu Hsu from Chinese Taipei, where they beat Ji Hi Choi (South Korea) and Ya Suan Lee (Chinese Taipei) 6-3 6-4.
Simmonds has claimed back-to-back titles having also lifted the 2019 ITF Transition Tour final in Antalya, Turkey, last month.
“I’m extremely happy to win a $25 000 [R359 546] event. The last one I won was in 2011. And even more so, winning the doubles the same week made it that much better,” said Simmonds.
“Having Tucker Vorster support me on court definitely helped. My dad was also able to come and watch my semis and finals. So that made it even more special to get two winning trophies. A big thank you to Tennis South Africa for the continued support.”
Simmonds will play three more $25 000 events in South Korea in the next three weeks.
