Reigning world ATP and WTA number 1's, Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep have backed up their rankings with respective singles titles at the French Open that concluded this past weekend on the clay courts of Roland-Garros.

Spaniard Nadal, claimed a record-extending 11th French Open title after beating eighth-ranked Dominic Thiem of Austria in straight sets to defend his 2017 title.

Nadal wasted no time in what proved to be a fairly one-sided affair, dispatching Thiem 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 42 minutes.

Following his win, Nadal reflected on what has been a tough road of setbacks and injury in the lead up to another major win.

"You know how difficult is everything especially after going through these tough moments and personally for me it is amazing and very emotional."

"Coming back after almost 5 months of not playing a full tournament, and having the chance to win especially here was a very special moment," Nadal said.

Top seed Halep in her turn navigated a competitive challenge from American Sloan Stephens to win her first major title after having lost three Grand Slam finals before.

The French Open top seed stumbled in the first set of the final against the US Open champion Stephens but kept her cool to produce a comeback performance worthy of the championship winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Halep was the favorite to win her first major title due to her opponents typically stronger hard court game rather than the clay of Roland Garros which is exactly what she has done.
