Marumo Gallants are confident of pulling off an upset this weekend when they face Orlando Pirates in Bloemfontein in the Premier Soccer League.

The last time the two clubs met, the Soweto giants thrashed Gallants 8-1 at Orlando Stadium. However, Gallants believe the pressure is on Pirates, who are still in the league title race, while they themselves are fighting to avoid relegation.

New Gallants striker Junior Zindoga told OFM Sport that the team has clear objectives and welcomes the challenge.

“It’s a massive game – an opportunity for everyone to really put in a good shift,” said Zindoga, who had never been to Bloemfontein before signing with Gallants. “It’ll probably be a full stadium, and everyone is geared up to play against the Buccaneers. They’re chasing the league title, and we’re pushing for a top-eight finish, so it’s a big game for us.”

Given the magnitude of the match, no extra motivation is needed for the team as they fight for survival in the league.

Relegation battle

Gallants are aiming for their first win in a while after three consecutive defeats to Richards Bay, AmaZulu, and Mamelodi Sundowns. However, they managed a goalless draw against fourth-placed Polokwane City in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

Three points would provide much-needed breathing room in the relegation battle – something that, at this stage of the season, is worth its weight in gold.

Interim coach Sundra Govender told OFM Sport that they are more than ready to face the Soweto giants and intend to apply pressure from the first whistle to the last. “We have to start fast and finish fast. Usually, you can see in the second half, we become a little bit sloppy and fade out,” said Govender.

“But this time around, in a game like this, the players are highly motivated, and that helps with the demands we’re placing on them this week.”

Saturday’s clash between Gallants and the Sea Robbers at Toyota Stadium kicks off at 17:45.
