The Confederation for African Football has launched the club Super League that will kick off next year. CAF unveiled their new tournament in Arusha, Tanzania yesterday with the target of a new era for the sport in Africa.

The tournament is set to feature 24 clubs from 16 countries.

CAF is yet to confirm the details around qualifying for the tournament or the structure that will be adopted.

During the press conference at the launch, the CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, said the tournament is set to kick off in August 2023 and all the details will be ironed out in the coming months.

“The African Super League represents the very best on the continent and we have seen a big appetite from investors to be involved in this project.

“"The intention is for kick-off in August 2023, and over the next few months there will be a process of engagement with various stakeholders.

“We will also explain to domestic competitions how this will affect their fixtures. At the end of the day, the future of club football is based on commercial competitiveness. The face of African football will never be the same again.”

The competition will have prize money to the tune off $100million with $11.6million of that going to the winner.
