The Premier Soccer League match between Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City FC was abandoned on Sunday afternoon due to security concerns and supporters unrest at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Rocklands.

The match was halted in the 23rd minute when supporters invaded the pitch.

The police tried to deal with the situation as best they could, however, the stun grenades that were used started turning ugly and supporters of Phunya Sele Sele started hurling chairs and other objects onto the field.

The players returned to the change rooms for their safety, however, the situation did not improve and the decision was taken to call off the game.

There were murmurings that the protest action is due to the uncertainty as to the sale of the club, which still has not been finalised even through Sinky Leshabane and her consortium agreed to purchase the embattled club.

No injuries have been reported following the unrest, and it remains to be seen what action the Premier Soccer League will take, and if the match will be rescheduled.

When the game was called off it was deadlocked at 0-0.
