Bloemfontein Celtic will be more than happy with their start to the season after securing a brilliant 2-0 win over Chippa United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Sunday.

Celtic overcame all the odds to secure the three points which see them second in the standings, although it is still early days.

Last week Celtic only had one training session after the players went on strike again due to unpaid wages. This promoted the South African Football Players Union to finally step in to try and defuse the situation.

There were even fears that the team would not pitch for their season opener, and police’s riot unit was in attendance at the slaughterhouse to deal with any trouble.

The first half was somewhat of a dull affair with the two teams sizing each other up, but after numerous threatening runs into the danger zone, the new boy, Tebogo Potsane, broke the deadlock in the 41st minute howler.

The host came out all guns blazing in the second stanza, to try and finish off the visitors from the Eastern Cape.

In the 56th minute the striker Tshego Mabasa was fouled in the box and make no mistake in doubling the lead from the penalty spot.

After the match, the coach Steve Komphela said with Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs to be played in the coming weeks, a win was vital.

Celtic travel to KwaMashu where they will face Clinton Larsen’s Golden Arrows on Wednesday. This will be a tough second match, and Komphela added that it is all about focus in the coming days.

Wednesday evening’s game at the Princess Magogo Stadium kicks off at 19:30.
