#Russia2018: AM Special Report 21 June | News Article

The African nation of Morocco yesterday became the first sure casualty of the 2018 FIFA Soccer World Cup in Russia following a 1-0 loss to Portugal at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

The score line which was courtesy of Portugal captain Christiano Ronaldo who scored his 85 international goal.

The game’s only goal was enough to see Ronaldo become the all-time top scoring European player and hold second on the all-time list of international goal scorers behind retired Iranian footballer Ali Daei, who tops the pops at 109 goals.

While Portugal have in all likelihood booked their spot in the next round, coach Fernando Santos remains adamant that they need to make sure of things in their last group stage match against Iran.

Iran in their turn suffered a heart breaking 1-0 defeat to Spain after remaining level for most of the game before David Coasta put the Spaniards ahead in the 54th minute.

Iran then managed to put the ball past Spanish keeper David De Gea minutes later but the newly implemented Video Assisted Referee intervened disallowing the goal as a result of Iran playing the ball from an offside position.

For Spain, all’s well that ends well but as for the teams in action today, who will taste victory and who will need to endure heartbreak.

Denmark and Australia get the 2nd round of Group C fixtures underway with their game which will kick off in Samara around 14:00 while France and Peru lock horns in the Ekaterinburg with kick-off at 17:00

The day’s action concludes when Lionel Messi’s Argentina face Croatia in a Group D clash at the Nizhny Novgorod with kick-off set for 20:00.
