DA wants report on national intervention in NW | News Article
North West Premier, Job Mokgoro

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West wants cooperative governance and traditional affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to table progress reports following national government's intervention in the province.

The North West was placed under Section 100(1)(a) and (b) intervention in May 2018 and an inter-ministerial task team, headed by Dlamini-Zuma, was appointed to investigate collapsed governance.

"It is shocking that, almost two years after this intervention, no progress in terms of good governance has been made," said Carin Visser, DA North West NCOP member in the provincial legislature.

She said it was imperative that progress reports be tabled, and "the fact that this has not been done" as standard procedure was "alarming" and cast doubt on how efficient the intervention would be.

"We are further concerned that, since the commencement of the sixth parliament last year, no handover reports have been passed down to the newly appointed MECs of the 10 respective departments," added Visser.

"The manner in which the national intervention has been conducted thus far is not conducive to the improvement of service delivery or any other constitutional obligation towards citizens," said Visser.

She said the DA did not participate in Friday's state of the province address (SOPA) as it was yet to be proven that it had been be a "legitimate" event.

The party staged a walkout after saying that premier Job Mokgoro was not fit to deliver the address because the provincial government was under administration.

Mokgoro told media on Friday that it was "fit and proper" that he delivered the SOPA.

"We are not a reckless government," Mokgoro said.
