NW hospital successfully treats Congo fever | News Article

The Tshepong Hospital in the North West has successfully treated a case of Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

The hospital received a call from the Anncron Emergency Unit for referral of a patient highly suspected of having Congo Fever on Saturday.

Preparations and arrangement to transfer the patient to the hospital’s Highly Infectious Unit (HID) were done, and the patient was received.

A specialist at the hospital confirmed the disease after blood tests were taken. The patient is under close observation at the hospital and responding well to the treatment.

Health department spokesperson, Nico Masiu, says this proves the hospital is well equipped.

Masiu further says Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever should in no way be mistaken with the coronavirus, which is an airborne disease.

CCHF can be transmitted through animal blood and body fluids of an infected person or animal. It has a mortality rate of 10-40%.

Symptoms include sudden high fever, bleeding, muscle pain, dizziness, neck pain, abdominal pain and a sore throat followed by confusion, with resultant liver failure.
