A total of 22 children died on school grounds across South Africa in 2018.

This is according to the statistics for the 2018 academic year that was released by the South African Police Services and was contained in an answer on a written question in parliament.

Only two months after the cut-off date of these statistics – the Driehoek High School tragedy claimed four lives in February this year.

A connecting bridge collapsed injuring about 26 kids from the school in Vanderbijlpark. According to the statistics, KwaZulu-Natal had the highest rate in the country with nine deaths, followed by North West with four.
