The Umhlatuzana River burst its banks and several residents were allegedly trapped in their homes. 

Disaster management services said by 9.15 pm, the bottom of the N2 south bound off-ramp to Edwin Swales was flooded at the traffic light. 

The M7 west bound toward Bellville Bridge was heavily water logged and motorists were urged to drive slowly. Visibility was almost zero at these points. 

Higginson Highway was flooded in both directions and the area at the bottom of Isipingo Beach, at Prospecton, was flooded. 

The N2 north opposite Galleria mall was also flooded, with cars backing up. The water was deep and motorists were urged to drive slowly and with extreme caution. 

Flooding had also taken place in Doonside. 

City manager Sipho Nzuza said via an emailed statement on Monday night that localised flooding was expected and residents, particularly in low lying areas, were urged to exercise caution. 

A warning issued by the South African Weather Services earlier in the day said a storm was expected over eThekwini, especially over the central and southern areas. 

"Since 10 am, the municipality has been in constant contact with the South African Weather Services forecasters who have been reviewing the forecast and current indications show that tonight from 22:00 until 05:00 tomorrow morning eThekwini will receive significant rainfall.

“The storm is expected to move in a southerly direction concentrated along the western boundary of the province and move off into the sea. Given the rain, over the past two days, the ground is already saturated which could lead to increased riverine flow,' said Nzuza.

"Municipal departments are on standby to respond in the event of any disasters or emergencies.”
