Blitzboks geared for Australian challenge in Dubai─── MORGAN PIEK 17:09 Fri, 29 Nov 2024
“We want to be a strong defensive force this season. If we manage that, our speedy backs will score tries.”
The Springbok Sevens team are set to kick off their campaign at the 2024 Dubai 7s with confidence and clarity following a week of focused preparation in Dubai. Head coach Philip Snyman emphasized that the team is ready for their Pool A matches against Australia, Kenya, and France.
“The guys are in a good space for the weekend,” said Snyman. The preparation included a mix of gym sessions, intense defensive drills, and tactical clarity during their traditional captain’s run. Snyman noted their primary focus this season is on defense, aiming to capitalize on turnovers and convert them into tries through their quick backs.
Last season, defensive lapses were a challenge for the Blitzboks, but Snyman expressed confidence in the strides made to address these issues. “We want to be a strong defensive force this season. If we manage that, our speedy backs will score tries,” he said.
The Blitzboks ended last season on a high, securing bronze at the Olympic Games by defeating Australia, their first opponents in Dubai. Snyman acknowledged Australia’s motivation to bounce back but stressed the importance of focusing on their own performance. "A few teams, including Australia, have new personnel and coaches, so it will be a very competitive tournament,” he said.
Physicality will dominate the match against Kenya, while facing France brings added motivation after their Olympic loss. Snyman sees the opening match as crucial, setting the tone for the tournament. Despite their dominance in Dubai, winning five of the last eight tournaments, Snyman dismissed added pressure. “We’ll achieve our goals only by focusing on ourselves and executing well.”
