The Irish outfit and the Toyota Cheetahs will go head-to-head in Belfast on Saturday in the Guinness PRO14, and if the three previous matches are anything to go by, another cracking game can be expected.

To date, the two teams have played just once before at the Kingspan Stadium, and that was back in September 2017, during what was the Cheetahs first ever game in the PRO14. This clash was won by the home side, and in convincing fashion with a 41-19 victory.

The last two games were both played in Bloemfontein and saw one game playing to a 29-all draw, while the most recent encounter ended in a 63-26 victory for the Cheetahs.

Ulster has had a number of Springboks plying their trade in Belfast and currently, Marcell Coetzee, rates as among the best, while the Cheetahs captain, Ruan Pienaar, enjoys legendary status among the Ravenhill faithful.

These two are both expected to be in action this week for the respective teams, while someone like former Lions and Sharks outside back, Louis Ludik, may well be in action as well.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Coetzee, said that he is looking forward to the game, especially because the two teams are known for a similar brand of rugby, while play-off ambitions will add more spice to the contest.

“We are very excited at hosting the Cheetahs this weekend.

“Both teams have a specific brand that we love to play. Both rely on speed and physicality, and that is definitely what the Cheetahs are going to bring this weekend.

“Coming from the loss like us, they will definitely have that hunger in the belly to rectify that, and obviously play-offs spots are up for grabs. Going into this game there will certainly be a hunger for both teams.

“It should be a great spectacle to watch.

The biggest talking point heading into the game is definitely the eagerly anticipated return of Pienaar to the famous ground.

Pienaar played in 140 games for Ulster over a seven-year period is no doubt a fan favourite.

Coetzee added that the World Cup-winning Springbok is held in very high regard in Belfast.

“On Ruan (Pienaar) returning, I think that he has done phenomenal for the Cheetahs. Not just in the PRO14, but also in the Currie Cup.

“You can just see the experience and flair that he brings. I am sure that he will get a warm reception from the local crowd.

“They see Ruan as the Mayor of Belfast here, and that is actually not a joke. The people just love him and rate him very highly.

“They still speak about him often, and as former teammates, we are looking forward to playing against him as well.

“He is a world-class player, and where ever he goes he will make a difference.”

Saturday’s game at the Kingspan Stadium kicks off at 21:35.
