The former Toyota Cheetahs and Springboks flanker, Heinrich Brüssow, has announced his retirement from rugby with immediate effect.

The Grey College old boy had been plying his trade in England at the club side, the Northampton Saints.

The 33-year-old had been plagued with injuries throughout his career, this led to him only playing 21 times for the Saints since moving to the club from Japan in 2018.

Brüssow’s last match was just a fortnight ago against their win over Leicester Tigers. In that game, he sustained a hamstring strain that ruled him out of the Premiership opening round fixture against Saracens.

Brüssow conceded that continuous injuries led to the decision to hang up his boots.

“I feel very proud to have represented a club like Saints which has such a rich history and the passionate support of Northampton behind them.

“I came to Northampton after spending a long time in Japan, looking for a new challenge and to push myself here in England.

“But I have been battling injuries for some time now and I have made the very difficult decision to call time on my career.”

Known as one of the best fetchers in world rugby, Brüssow, more often than not received the short end of the stick when it came to being selected for the Springboks.

It is somewhat hard to believe that the player only represented the Springboks in 23 Tests.

As a Springbok, he helped the national team win the 2009 series against the British & Irish Lions, and the then Tri-Nations.

As a player, Brüssow, was never in a losing side in the five Tests he played against the All Blacks.

Brüssow represented the Free State in 61 games and the Cheetahs in 82. Despite having left the franchise in 2015 he is regarded as a rugby legend in Bloemfontein.
