The Springboks’ 36-34 win over the All Blacks in Wellington over the weekend will serve as a major confidence booster for the team win the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan in mind.

In just over a year from now, the Springboks and All Blacks will lock-horns in Yokohama in their opening game of the global showpiece.

The Toyota Cheetahs coach, Franco Smith, who was part of the Springboks side which beat the All Blacks 13-3 in Wellington in 1998, told OFM Sport that now it is a matter of stringing together consistent performances.

“Personally I am really proud to be a South African after that performance by the Springboks”, said the former Bok flyhalf and inside centre.

“This is only a start and it mustn’t be seen as an accomplishment. I sure that Rassie (Erasmus) will say the same thing.

“This is the start, they have shown what they can do. I think that the next step will be consistency, and I am sure that is what they will be aiming at.

“I played in ’98 when we played against them at Athletic Park in Wellington, and what an awesome and wonderful day that was.

“I know that they guys are going to enjoy it and use it as confidence. That is was we as the Toyota Cheetahs need as well. It will just be that little push over the edge to create a snowballing effect.”

The win on Saturday means that the Springboks moved back up to fifth in the world rankings.
