The new golden boy of swimming Bloemfontein, Zane Waddell, recorded one of the fastest 50m backstrokes of all time.


Waddell, who won the 50m backstroke gold at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, clocked a split of 20.33 sec during the 200m medley relay while swimming for the University of Alabama at the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama.

The fastest time yet, of 20.20 sec belongs to the Olympic champion, Ryan Murphy, which was set back in 2016.

Last season, the Grey College old boy, Waddell, swam even faster when he recorded a split of 20.22 sec.

In 2019, Waddell, achieved national stardom in South Africa when he touched the wall in 24.43 sec while swimming out of lane two at the World Championships.

Earlier in the year during the World University Games in Napoli, Italy, Waddell, shared the 50m backstroke gold with the USA’s Justin Ress, when the two touched the wall in 24.48 sec.
