Hydrate well ahead of the Music Marathon | News Article

The 2019 Music Marathon with OFM and hosted by Bloemfontein Achilles Running Club will take place on Saturday morning, and as is the case with any other race, hydration will be very important.

The event, which starts and finishes at the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein, will feature a 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half marathon, 10km road race and 5km fun run.

There will be water points every three kilometres on the route, however, the conditions may have an effect on Saturday.

The heat and drought in Central South Africa have been a challenge of late, however, the rain has started to fall.

At this stage, it appears that it could be overcast on Saturday, and warming up later in the morning. Having said that, the early forecast indicates that their humidity on Saturday morning could be upwards of sixty per cent.

Event organiser, Gordon van Wyk, told OFM Sport that there will be enough water points, but advises runners to prepare well, especially with hydration in mind.

“They are predicting thunderstorms in the late afternoon, so hopefully with the clouds coming over it could drop the temperature a little for the runners.

“Luckily starting at 5:30 am it is still cooler, but once you start getting to 8 or 9 am it starts getting warmer.

“There are enough water points on the route, but the one factor that nobody can determine is the weather.

"We might have some rain in the morning and I think that will be superb for the runner, or it might even be a scorching day.

“I think the best it to hydrate beforehand and make sure that you have a good base between now and Friday evening, and stay on the liquids and the electrolytes.”

The Music Marathon is an official qualifier for 2020 Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons.
