The 400m world record holder and reigning Olympic champion, Wayde van Niekerk, will not be defending his IAAF World Championships title in Doha, Qatar, later in the month.

The two-time World Champion from Bloemfontein has only recently returned to training after another injury setback placed his participation in Qatar in doubt.

While he would have been allowed to compete despite limited time on the track since injuring his knee in October 2017, Van Niekerk confirmed that he will not be up for his title defence.

“I'm still positive and I'm just taking things day by day, respecting all the calls made by the doctor and respecting my body.

“For me, it's just about listening to my body and taking it from there.

“My main goal is to look after my body and when the opportunity comes, I'll take it.

“For now I'm not rushing myself or putting pressure on myself. I'm extremely happy and at peace with where I am."

Earlier in the year, Van Niekerk did make his comeback when he won the gold at the Free State Championships in Bloemfontein. He did, however, withdraw from the South African championships which took place in Germiston a couple of months later.

The 2019 World Championships will start on Friday 27 September and run until Sunday 6 October.
