The University of the Free State Kovsies became the first time ever to win the Varsity Netball title for a record third time.

Kovsies dethroned the champions, the University of Pretoria Tuks, at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein, with an outstanding 63-59 win.

In a tightly contested affair, Kovsies, lead the match 19-15 after the first quarter in the City of Roses.

The visitors from the capital city put up a valiant fight to narrow the gap slightly during the second quarter, however, Kovsies held the lead at 30-28 at the half time break.

In the third quarter, Tuks made good use of their power play, but it Kovsies held their nerve to hold onto a single point lead going into the final quarter.

Kovsies made brilliant use of their power play in the final 15 minutes to stretch their lead to six points at one stage to put the game out of reach for the visitors. Tuks did put up a good fight until the bitter end, but it was the little mistakes which swung the game in favour of the hosts.

Earlier, the Kovsies captain, Alicia Puren, told OFM Sport that up until the final, they felt that they had not played the perfect game of netball yet, in the competition and that was their goal for the championship match.

Beating the defending champions to win a record third title can certainly be viewed as the perfect game.

Amazingly, it was the third time that Kovsies contested a final and third time they won it.
