Bloemfontein’s Olympic and double World Championships gold medalist, Wayde van Niekerk, has backed the new eight-nation Athletics World Cup which will be taking place in July.

South Africa will be one of the eight nations competing along with the hosts Britain as well as the United States, Poland, France, China, Germany and Jamaica.

Van Niekerk, who is still undergoing rehabilitation to his knee and will miss the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games endorsed the strength versus strength concept which will see one athlete from the eight different countries square off for every track and field event. It's  also a straight final concept.

This goes for both the men's and women's events.

“The South African team will be there in force and we hope to see fans from all over the world join us in London for what will be an amazing competition,” Van Niekerk said in a statement from British Athletics.

The inaugural Athletics World Cup is scheduled to take place at the London Stadium on 14 and 15 July.
